Depression

Depression is more common among children and adolescents than most people realize. Signs of possible depression are persistent sadness, irritability, withdrawal, change in appetite, declining grades, poor self-esteem, hopelessness, and wishes to be dead. Serious depression is a significant risk factor for self-harm or suicide. Depression in adolescents can lead to substance abuse as a means of "self-medicating" to feel better.
  • I help children and adolescents decrease depressive symptoms, develop coping strategies, improve self-esteem, and process personal issues that contribute to their depression.
  • I work with parents on how to support their child's recovery and prevent re-occurrence.
  • I collaborate with psychiatrists in the event medication is necessary to treat symptoms.
